The Gallia Academy Music department recently traveled to Boston, MA to compete in the Heritage Music Festival. The students prepared three pieces of music which were then presented to a panel of adjudicators who assigned ratings for the performance. The Madrigals received a Gold 1st Place rating which earned the group a spot to perform in the Festival of Gold & the National Youth Choir Festival at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. This honor is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which we feel blessed to have been given. The Madrigals will have the opportunity to perform alongside 200-400 other high school students from across the nation who have receive the same honor. Pending school board approval, the group plans to attend the Festival at Carnegie Hall in March of 2019.
While at the competition, two students were also recognized for their specific contributions to our school music program. Elizabeth Hoover was one of seven students who received the “Maestro Award” for outstanding musicianship for her solo performance in a song entitled, The Road Home, by Stephen Paulus. This award comes with a nomination for Liz to perform at Carnegie Hall or the Sydney Opera House. We are incredibly proud of Liz’s heartfelt performance.
Morgan Loveday was the one and only recipient of the “Ovation Award”, given to a high school student who displays exemplary musicianship, citizenship and acts of community service within her school and community. Each director was asked to nominate a student for this particular award. We are very proud that the adjudicators were able to understand just how much Morgan, and students like her, mean to our school music program.
The GAHS Music students would like to thank Mr. Wright and the Gallipolis City School Board for allowing them to have this wonderful opportunity to showcase their musical abilities.
