FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICES DEPARTMENT

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Gallipolis City School community from your Food And Nutrition Services Department. We operate 5 full service student cafeterias.  Services Include:

  • Daily free breakfast at all schools
  • Daily lunch at each school
  • After school programs

Prices are: Lunch 2.75 / Reduced lunch .40

Breakfast is free to all students.

The mission of the Food and Nutrition Services is to alleviate childhood hunger within the community and increase student success by providing a nutritionally balanced diet in a warm and friendly environment.

The Food and Nutrition Services Program does not receive General Fund Support; the program operates by balancing the budget through meal sales, a la carte sales, and State/Federal reimbursement.

Each school kitchen has a team of highly trained staff with food safety and customer service as a highest priority. These team members (often times parents of school district students themselves), receive and prepare food, cashier, serve meals, and keep the kitchen and in some cases the cafeterias clean. There is a Food Service Supervisor that analyze menus and recipes adjusted to ensure they meet USDA nutrition guidelines for each age group for calories, sodium, and saturated fat.

A lunch is made up of 5 basic food components: milk, meat or meat alternate, vegetable fruit, and grain.  Students must select at least 3 of these components for a complete meal (1 of which must be a vegetable or fruit).

Purchasing a meal is very easy. Every student is assigned a student ID that is tied to his or her meal account all the way through school. The account is similar to a checking account, where purchases are deducted from funds applied to the account. Funds can be applied by cash or check paid to the kitchen cashier. Money left in the students account will be transferred to the next year. No refund are given.  When a student’s makes a purchase and the student is due change all of the money is put on their accounts instead of returning their change. This is so the line for lunch moves faster and everyone gets enough time to enjoy their lunch.

Online credit and debit card payments are also available by following the payment links on the district website www.gc.k12.oh.us. Your student’s account balance and purchase statement can be viewed by logging into the lunchbox access account. If a child’s account goes into the negative, an automated phone call will be sent to the parent/guardian. These notices take place twice a week as a service to the family to ensure that negative charges do not accrue drastically before a parent/guardian is made aware. There is a limit to charges : Elementary 5, Middle 2, High School 1 after the charge limit is reached an alternative lunch will be provided which consists of a sandwich, fruit, and milk. The student will receive an alternative lunch till charges are paid or up to 5 school days. No student will go without lunch.

The Food and Nutrition Services Program participates in the National School Lunch Program, which is a federally funded program that assists in providing nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free meals to students each day. One form per family must be fully completed (be sure to include everyone in your household and all income) and returned to the Food Services office or school as soon as possible. New families will need to have their applications approved before the subsidy will apply, until that time, full charges will accrue. For returning, new applications must be submitted each school year by the 30th school day or the subsidy carry-over will expire. Parents/guardians are highly encouraged to fill out the application as soon as possible to avoid these charges because it will be their responsibility to pay back any fee accrual. Forms may be found on the web page.

For menus and other information, please visit the school's web page on the district website www.gc.k12.oh.us. . If you have any questions about the Food and Nutrition Services Department, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Marsha Haner
